After Red Skull had told them that he is the keeper of the Soul Stone, he gives a history of this gem and explains what needs to be done to bear the Soul Stone.

Red Skull then reveals that to get the Soul Stone, one has to trade the soul of one person that they love.

Gamora says that Thanos never loved anyone and so it is impossible for him to get the Soul Stone but she is surprised to see him filled with tears and he says that he loves his daughter.

Thanos then throws Gamora off a cliff, and she dies. He then awakens in a lake with the Soul Stone.
