Pop culture’s newest obsession The Witcher is on its way to become the biggest Season 1 for Netflix. During a shareholders’ meeting Netflix revealed that the fantasy series has already been watched by 76 million households.
Though the quantity is staggering it should be kept in mind that the way Netflix analyses its data viewers who just watched 1 minute of the series are also included in this number. But still 76 million is a huge quantity to begin with.
The fantasy drama had a huge hype and expectation to live up to. It boasted a stellar cast of Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Eamon Farren and Anya Chalotra to name a few. The book series of the same name written by Andrzej Sapkowski has legions of fans all over the world and the general consensus is that the Netflix reiteration has done a great job.
Another thing that worked in the shows’ favour apart from Henry Cavill’s smouldering good looks and brilliant portrayal of Geralt was that many fantasy lovers had a Game of Thrones shaped hole in their heart which they desperately wanted to fill. This series in some ways did that and it must be said in a pretty satisfactory way.
Though not a critical hit like Game of Thrones the series is compelling enough to raise the sales of the original series of books and games. It has also spawned a viral musical hit in the words of Netflix executives.
As far as the future of the series is concerned Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has been quoted as to having a seven season plan for the story. She has also revealed that she is going to include more representation in the shows’ sophomore season.
A second season was announced even before the release of first season and speculations are rife that a plan for season 3 is under way.
