The curtains are now closing on 2019 and we are now moving into the awards season. This is the exciting time of year when all the studios try and get their movies considered for the Academy Awards. Recently, National Board of Review had announced their award winners- they had named Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman as the best movie of the year. What was shocking is that not even a single DC or Marvel movie had made it to the top 10.
By naming The Irishman as its top movie, National Board of Review President Annie Schulhof had said that the movie was representing the “best in what cinema can be”, and this is a comment that a few might actually find interesting, taking into account the controversy Scorsese had stirred when he took a stance about what constitutes cinema. Other than o The Irishman Robert De Niro, and Al Pacino had also been awarded the organizations Icon Award.
“We are thrilled to award The Irishman as our Best film — Martin Scorsese’s masterful mob epic is a rich, moving, beautifully textured movie that represents the best in what cinema can be,” Schulhof had said.
“We are also excited to be presenting Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino with our inaugural Icon Award — they are the true definition of cinematic icons, each with their own exceptional body of work, and all in top form in The Irishman.”
While the NBR did not honor any movie from Marvel and DC, given the success of Joker, it is a surprise to not see any of the superhero movies in this list. The Best Director award had gone to Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood. This movie had seen Brad Pitt being named as the Best Supporting Actor. Best Animated Feature had gone to How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
We had seen Rian Johnson’s Knives Out earning the Best Ensemble award. Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, Knives Out and Jojo Rabbit had made the top ten moives and the movie, Midsommar had made the list of top ten independent movies.
The entire list of top ten movies as per the National Board of Review, is as follow:
- Dolemite is My Name
- Ford v Ferrari
- Jojo Rabbit
- Knives Out
- Marriage Story
- Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
- Richard Jewell
- Uncut Gems
The Irishman is now streaming on Netflix.
