Greatest Thanos Quotes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and comic books. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has given the fans a lot of remarkable superheroes over the span of 10 years and 22 movies, all-encompassing a range of brilliant characters, amazing abilities and extraordinary development arcs. From Rocket Raccoon to the powerful God of Thunder, Thor, there has surely been no shortage of strong and charismatic characters. This shared universe has brought to the table a lot of memorable villains as well. From the beguiling and formidable Hela to the God of Mischievous, Loki, our Marvel superheroes have faced a lot of spectacular foes.
However, none has been as complex and frightening as the Mad Titan, Thanos. This purple cosmic villain is a world-conquering being has been defined by his own set of rules of conduct and moral compass. All throughout the movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Thanos has presented himself as a philosophical warrior and also a powerful intergalactic goon. All the fans would agree that he is by far the best MCU villain they have gotten. The Genocidal Maniac is a frightening soul, and his very presence always spells doom across the universe even for Earth’s mightiest heroes.
Over the past 22 movies, we saw him travel the universe along with the Black Order to collect the six Infinity stones and wipe away half of the population. The Great Titan does not collect the Infinity Stones solely for his own gain, and this differentiates him from the typical power-grabbing breed of antagonists like Darth Vader and Sauron. The Infinity Gauntlet and his stone collection give Thanos the power to do anything he wishes, and one must note that he does not personally enrich himself for the sake of power or ruling the world. This villain clearly seems to understand that his ideologies are evil, however, he also believes that once implemented, it will be effective and the universe would be grateful to him. As we have seen, the Mad Titan holds firm to the belief that his method is the only defence the world has against the brutality of reality and looks upon compassion and empathy as obstacles to rational reasoning.
The Mad Titan has proven to be a fleshed-out and engaging villain, and reflects the dangers of our time. Almighty Thanos is a self-righteous zealot, and nowadays, it is very easy to fall into the pit of toxic echo and in turn, become indoctrinated with hateful and spiteful thoughts. This tends to happen to intelligent people and great minds, but hey, we are all susceptible aren’t we? Well, because Thanos has the willpower to go ahead and implement all his twisted ideas in the universe, he has became one of the most terrifying being in Marvel Universe, not just because he is physically very powerful, but also due to his uncompromising nature. Here we have for you 21 greatest Thanos quotes that will prove why he is the best MCU villain there is:
1. “YOU’RE STRONG, BUT I COULD SNAP MY FINGERS AND YOU’D ALL CEASE TO EXIST.”
This quote by Thanos is a harbinger of all the pain and sorrow that would come during the events of Avengers: Endgame. Thanos was quoted saying this to the superheroes in Avengers: Infinity War, and it goes on to show that the purple cosmic villain is not one to sugar coat or mince his words. In just one sentence, Thanos had acknowledged the power, might and will of Earth’s mightiest heroes, but also warned that their combined power would be nothing as compared to the power of the Infinity Gauntlet. The movie, Infinity War had ended with the Avengers and allies like T’Challa and Doctor Strange facing Thanos only to lose the fight miserably. The Dark Lord had snapped his fingers, and half of the universe was wiped away.
2. “FUN ISN’T SOMETHING ONE CONSIDERS WHEN BALANCING THE UNIVERSE. BUT THIS… DOES PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE.”
Avengers: Infinity War had shown us that the Mad Titan was a man who was on a deadly mission. Even though Thanos could have been portrayed as a typical two-dimensional villain, he was humanized by the writers which helped them to display his multi-layered complex character aptly. While most of the world saw Thanos as a destroyer, he, however, saw himself as the creator and even the redeemer of the world. The Great Titan had levelled planets just so that they could rise out of ashes, and have a chance at more resources with fewer inhabitants. Yes, we agree this very line was not spoken in the movie, Infinity War, but it had been a humorous precursor to what he said to the superheroes in Avengers: Endgame.
3. “YOU HAVE MY RESPECT, STARK. WHEN I’M DONE, HALF OF HUMANITY WILL STILL BE ALIVE. I HOPE THEY REMEMBER YOU.
We can all agree that Thanos was not your typical villain. When Tony Stark aka, Iron Man engages the Genocidal Maniac in hand to hand combat, he was no real match for the Great Titan. Thanos goes on to stab Tony right in the chest and soon after delivers a line that could have been shortened to just, “…when I’m done, half of humanity will die”. However, Thanos is all about adding salt to the wound, and he goes on to tell Tony that he hopes that everyone on Earth would remember Iron Man. This was also a foreshadowing to Tony’s sacrifice during the events of Avengers: Endgame.
4. “I KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LOSE. TO FEEL SO DESPERATELY THAT YOU’RE RIGHT, YET TO FAIL NONETHELESS. IT’S FRIGHTENING, TURNS THE LEGS TO JELLY. I ASK YOU TO WHAT END? DREAD IT. RUN FROM IT. DESTINY ARRIVES ALL THE SAME. AND NOW IT’S HERE. OR SHOULD I SAY, I AM.”
This is what Thanos said while he addressed the Asgardians during the opening scene of Infinity War. Many might find it very hard to think of Thanos as feeling desperate, but this statement is very poignant and also echoes various elements of the character that had been revealed in comics like Thanos Rising and The Death of Captain Marvel. He had proclaimed himself the “destiny” that their future is made of, and the superheroes decide to use their undying hope and desperation as strengths and eventually create a whole new destiny in Avengers: Endgame.
5. “YOU WERE GOING TO BED HUNGRY, SCROUNGING FOR SCRAPS. YOUR PLANET WAS ON THE BRINK OF COLLAPSE. I’M THE ONE WHO STOPPED THAT. YOU KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENED SINCE THEN? THE CHILDREN BORN HAVE KNOWN NOTHING BUT FULL BELLIES AND CLEAR SKIES. IT’S A PARADISE.”
During a very emotional and heartfelt scene of Gamora and Thanos, the Mad Titan says this to explain that he had saved her from poverty and obscurity by taking Gamora away from her home planet, one of population he had ‘reduced’. While our superheroes believe in making our not-so-perfect world better by accepting all the major/minor flaws that could be resolved by discussions and other peaceful measures, Thanos saw a planet which was in denial of the political and socio-economic issues that were building up inevitable ruination via a scarcity of resources. By wiping away a lot of the population, he believed that there would be enough food and easy access to resources. That would resolve majority of the problems from this world in just one SNAP!
6. “THE HARDEST CHOICES REQUIRE THE STRONGEST WILLS.”
Thanos was quoted saying this is Infinity War. Every decision that he made was very carefully thought out, and nothing was ever an impulsive decision. He always made sure to measure repercussions and weigh all outcomes. Thanos knew that every action would have its series of consequences. Therefore when the Giant Titan had set out to destroy worlds, he knew very well that he would need an extremely strong will to complete the task, or else the guilt of empathizing with populations would be way too much for him to bear. The Mad Titan had pretty strong willpower, but the superheroes’ resolve was definitely stronger. Although Thanos had destroyed the Infinity Stones, the Avengers pooled in their resources and had come up with a method to get them all back.

7. “I THOUGHT THAT BY ELIMINATING HALF OF LIFE, THE OTHER HALF WOULD THRIVE. BUT YOU HAVE SHOWN ME… THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE. AS LONG AS THERE ARE THOSE THAT REMEMBER WHAT WAS, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THOSE, THAT ARE UNABLE TO ACCEPT WHAT CAN BE. THEY WILL RESIST..”
After the Dark Lord had used the Infinity Gauntlet for snapping away half of the universe, he had fled to a ‘paradise’ and went on to create a place for him to live in peace. The Avengers then tracked Thanos to his refuge as Nebula’ had helped them. He had then given a very poetic explanation about what he had done, and why what he did failed to work on Earth. He went on to say that they remained stagnant, were resistant to change, and were unable to progress just because they were crippled with their loss.
8. “I AM…INEVITABLE.”
On many occasions, the purple cosmic villain has been caught saying “I am inevitable”. Just like destiny and fate, Thanos knew the most crushing blow to the superheroes would be the thought that no matter what the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes did, his damage to the world would be certain. This was clear when the superheroes had located him after he had used the Infinity Gauntlet and Thanos explains that he had used their power to destroy the stones and this almost killed him. However, it had finalized the destructive purpose and also made the damage irreversible.
9. “I WILL SHRED THIS UNIVERSE DOWN TO ITS LAST ATOM AND THEN, WITH THE STONES YOU’VE COLLECTED FOR ME, CREATE A NEW ONE. IT IS NOT WHAT IS LOST BUT ONLY WHAT IT IS BEEN GIVEN… A GRATEFUL UNIVERSE.”
Although The Mad Titan had destroyed the six Infinity Stones after he had used the Infinity Gauntlet and wiped away half of the universe, the Avengers had combined Time Travel and Pym Particles to locate every stone. What the superheroes did not take into consideration was that a Thanos from the past had been following them back to their present era. Thanos was all ready to tear apart the whole universe just so that he could create a completely fresh world order with inhabitants who would worship his idyllic design and be grateful to him.
10. “YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITH YOUR OWN FAILURE, AND WHERE DID THAT BRING YOU? BACK TO ME.”
The years to follow after Thanos had snapped his fingers had been a very hard and bleak one for those on Earth. However, life was harder on the Avengers. The average citizen was not aware of the cost of the Mad Titan succeeding, but the Avengers knew what it all meant. Dealing with the consequences of their failure was a theme that ran through the events of Endgame, just like destiny. He feels that the Avengers simply cannot progress when they are living with the guilt of their failure. Thanos’s this gloating quote resonated in the minds of our heroes which spured the Avengers into finding a method to undo all the damage.
11. “IN ALL MY YEARS OF CONQUEST, VIOLENCE, SLAUGHTER, IT WAS NEVER PERSONAL. BUT I’LL TELL YOU NOW, WHAT I’M ABOUT TO DO TO YOUR STUBBORN, ANNOYING LITTLE PLANET… I’M GONNA ENJOY IT. VERY, VERY MUCH.”
In the final battle of Avengers: Endgame, the fans were treated to an epic moment where Captain America wielded the Mjolnir and went head to head with Thanos. He had put up a pretty good and powerful fight with the Mad Titan, however, Thanos used his weapon to destroy Cap’s vibranium shield. With just one powerful blow, Thanos threw Cap across the battlefield and delivered this quote. However, it does fall flat because right after he says this, Falcon, the Wakandan army, and all the other superheroes like Spider-Man, The Wasp return and beat the crap out of Thanos and his army.
12. “THE END IS NEAR, AND WHEN I’M DONE, HALF OF HUMANITY WILL STILL EXIST. PERFECTLY BALANCED, AS ALL THINGS SHOULD BE…AND I HOPE THEY REMEMBER YOU.”
Thanos said this to Tony Stark, aka Iron Man in the trailer of Infinity War. The Mad Titan was hell-bent on the idea that for a peaceful lifestyle to be achieved, half the population would have to be wiped away so that everyone has equal access to resources. The idea of having everything ‘perfectly balanced’ was a driving force for the purple cosmic villain. In the trailer, we hear him tell Tony about his plan of snapping away half the universe. He then goes on to tell Tony that there would still be another half of the world that would remain after the snap and he really does hope that Iron Man would be remembered by them.
13. “LITTLE ONE, IT’S A SIMPLE CALCULUS. THIS UNIVERSE IS FINITE, ITS RESOURCES, FINITE. IF LIFE IS LEFT UNCHECKED, LIFE WILL CEASE TO EXIST. IT NEEDS CORRECTING.”
There was a scene in Infinity War where we saw Thanos and Gamora have a short but extremely emotional conversation. Thanos tells Gamora that he saved her from a planet of poverty and he had also reduced the population of the planet. While Gamora thought that her planet was a world of happy inhabitants, the Mad Titan saw a planet where people were in denial of all the socio-and political, economic issues. Gamora then tells Thanos that she never really had a problem staying on her planet and they were all living peacefully until he came along. To this, Thanos delivers this statement to her.
14. “I THOUGHT THAT BY ELIMINATING HALF OF LIFE, THE OTHER HALF WOULD THRIVE. BUT YOU’VE SHOWN ME… THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE. AS LONG AS THERE ARE THOSE THAT REMEMBER WHAT WAS, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THOSE THAT ARE UNABLE TO ACCEPT WHAT CAN BE. THEY WILL RESIST.”
In Avengers: Endgame, after Thanos travels into the present timeline and attacks the Avengers headquarters, the MCU trinity, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor confront Thanos. The Mad Titan waits for them to approach him and stands up in all his glory. The trio was all set to attack and kill Thanos, but before that, the Giant Titan decided to give them a little pep talk. He looks around and delivers this line to which Iron Man responds, “Yeah, we’re all kinds of stubborn.” A full-on battle ensues between them, and the rest of the battle goes on to take place in the favour of the superheroes, except for Iron Man’s death.
15. “YOU SHOULD HAVE GONE FOR THE HEAD.”
During the battle of Wakanda, in Infinity War, we saw all the superheroes battle Thanos and the Black Order. After a very bloody battle, we saw Thor, the God of Thunder drive the Stormbreaker right into Thanos’ chest. A shocked Thanos then fell to his feet, and the fans were made to believe that it was the end of the Infinity saga. However, a plot twist came into play, and Thanos told Thor, “you should have gone for the head” without knowing that Thor would do just that in Avengers: Endgame. He then snapped his fingers, and as he had said, half of the universe was wiped away. The remaining Avengers stared in shock and were hopeless by the end of Infinity War.
16. “YOUR POLITICS BORE ME. YOUR DEMEANOR IS THAT OF A POUTY CHILD.”
In Guardians of the Galaxy, the Nova Corps officers capture the Guardians and then detains the four of them in the Kyln prison. Drax the Destroyer, a powerful inmate tries to kill Gamora because of her association with Thanos and Ronan. Thanos incidentally had killed his entire family. Quill had then convinced Drax that Gamora can actually bring Ronan to him, although Gamora had gone on to reveal that she had betrayed Ronan and was unwilling to let him use the power of the orb. Ronan then meets the Mad Titan to discuss Gamora’s betrayal. Thanos seems fed up of Ronan, delivers this line and then sends him off with a warning.
17. “FINE, I’LL DO IT MYSELF.”
We had first seen the live-action version of Thanos in the MCU, played by Damion Poitier in the movie, The Avengers. Josh Brolin had then taken over this role in the movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War and also, Avengers: Endgame. During the mid-credits scene of the movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thanos who is very disappointed and dissatisfied by the failures of his minions, goes on to don the Infinity Gauntlet and vows to collect the six Infinity Stones on his own by saying, “fine, I’ll do it myself.”
18. “WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT BECOMING GOD WOULD BE SUCH A HOLLOW VICTORY.”
The fans had read this quote by Thanos, in The Thanos Quest (1990), Book 2. In this issue, the Mad Titan returns to Death’s sanctum with all the six Infinity Stones and goes on to boast of all his achievement and his status as Death’s equal. Death then goes on to congratulate him and yet speaks to him through her minions. When the purple cosmic villain demands to talk to Death personally as his mate, she then points out to him via her minions, that with his status of omnipotence, Thanos is surely not her equal, but has become her superior, and so, it would definitely not be fitting for her to address Thanos personally. The Mad Titan then destroys all the minions in rage. He then tries to comprehend all his miscalculations, and finally wonders how becoming a God could prove to be a hollow victory.
19. “I NOW HOLD OMNIPOTENCE. WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH SUCH ALMIGHTY POWER? THE ANSWER TO THAT IS ACTUALLY QUITE SIMPLE: ANYTHING I WANT. ANYTHING. I AM INCAPABLE OF ERROR. ANY RESULT THAT DISPLEASES ME I CAN SIMPLY REVERSE. THERE IS NOTHING I NEED TO WORRY ON, FOR I AM THANOS. AND THANOS IS SUPREME. SUPREME.”
Thanos says this to Mephisto in the issue of The Infinity Gauntlet (1991). Here, Mephisto was flattering the Mad Titan and had declared him to be a God and wanted to serve him. The roots of this series actually date to the elements and concepts that had been developed in comics that Starlin had written for Marvel during the 1970s, especially Thanos and the Infinity Stones. Jim Starlin had then returned to Marvel in the year, 1990 and wrote Silver Surfer volume 3 issue #34 and the storyline had developed over the next sixteen issues and the limited series, Thanos Quest before it had ended with The Infinity Gauntlet.
20. “THE UNIVERSE WILL NOW BE SET RIGHT. MADE OVER TO FIT MY UNIQUE VIEW OF WHAT SHOULD BE. LET NIHILISM REIGN SUPREME!”
Thanos was quoted saying this in The Infinity Gauntlet (1991)- Issue 2: From Bad to Worse. This series had been a top seller for Marvel and had been followed by two sequel- The Infinity War in the year, 1992 and also, The Infinity Crusade in the year, 1993. The Infinity Gauntlet had remained to be a very popular issue among all the fans and had also warranted a lot of reprints and merchandises with its plot and theme elements adapted into animated cartoons, video games, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
21. “I WOULD PREFER DEATH TO IMPRISONMENT! PRIDE: MY ONE FATAL FLAW.”
The Mad Titan says this in The Infinity Gauntlet (1991) to all the gathered superheroes, as the villain fakes his death after he had lost the Infinity Gauntlet to the character, Adam Warlock in Issue 6: The Final Confrontation. The Infinity Gauntlet is a very popular comic book storyline and had an eponymous, six-issue limited series that was written by Jim Starlin, Ron Lim, and George Pérez. This had been published from July to December in the year, 1991, and had many tie-in books into which this storyline had crossed over.
