The beginning of the year has never been oh so good for the movies. Nobody expects to garner blockbusters during this time of the year, but still the last few years were able to change the tide somewhat by giving good movies which were also financially successful. But this year we returned to ground zero with the same pattern repeated. More so we got a movie with the worst opening ever. The Rhythm Section became the worst opener for a movie released in more than 3000 theatres. Thee movie proved to be a huge disaster for Paramount who was desperately looking for a comeback as there other movie this year Like a boss also didn’t do wonders.

They got the bounce back and what a bounce back it was. A lot was riding on Sonic the hedgehog not only for Paramount but also for the genre of video games over all. In the last few years video game adaptations have not been able to perform as per expectations. Therefore the movie as a whole also got delayed because the first trailer and the animation of Sonic did not get a good response. Seems like all the patience bore fruit as the movie is doing phenomenally well in theatres. In all honesty after everything it was a good call that the movie was delayed as Jim Carrey gives one of his best performances in the movie and nothing subpar even suits with him. Jim Carrey is back to the performance which made him a superstar in the 90s. His physical comedy is mind-blowing. It is not like we didn’t love him in Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, but this is where he shines.

The movie has topped the box office inching past Birds of Prey which is a far second. The movie grossed $68 million in the United States and Canada, and $43 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $111 million and in the process broke the record of Detective Pikachu as the highest opener for a video game based movie.
