This is the year and decade of Franchises. They are rising after being done and dusted- case in point being Matrix and Gossip Girl. They are getting a redo after being a disaster the first time round – Mortal Kombat and Dune. Or something that at first was deemed as incapable of reiteration is getting an adaptation- The Witcher.
Therefore it was obvious that at one point or the other the topic of Lethal Weapon would come to fore. It is one of those unique properties that has worked both on screen as well as on TV running for three seasons on Fox.
Even though people were excited about the series, hence a three season run. Fans were dying to see Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in their iconic role. The whole reason why there was never a fifth sequel and the universe was rebooted for TV was because both the actors expressed a lack of interest in coming back.
Shane black once revealed that he had a pitch for a fifth movie in which both Roger and Martin face a team of expert Blackwater guys from Afghanistan, smuggling antiquities. A young policeman was also supposed to be there acting as a counter point. According to him the speciality of this movie would have been the focus on Roger and Martin. It would not have taken the conventional route of giving the young guy mileage and creating a spin off out of it.
But now all of our dreams have come true as Donner, the director of the last four movies has decided to give the franchise a swan song of sorts. The movie would feature both Gibson and Glover as they both have agreed to return. The story reportedly is very personal and fitting as a closing to such an epic franchise.
The Lethal Weapon movies released from 1987 to 1998. The TV series ran from 2016-2019.
