After Doctor Strange gave the Time Stone to Thanos, effectively handing him the power to kill half of the universe’s life, the common consensus was that he personally knew what he was doing. A lot of fans are of the opinion that his actions were necessary to create that one timeline wherein the Avengers win and to avoid the 14 million others where all went wrong. In fact, even the makers, Russo Brothers have indicated in that direction.
That also means that Doctor Strange is essentially akin to an expert puppeteer who pulled strings behind the scenes, and is for some inexplicable reasons, not revealing his real plans to his colleagues. However, could it be that he is doing a lot more than what we had so far thought? Was the Sorcerer Supreme responsible for the things that we witnessed in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War when Nick Fury summoned Captain Marvel?
Well, that’s what a new fan theory has suggested. A Reddit user says that Strange might have traveled back in time and he might even play a cameo in Captain Marvel, to warn a much younger Fury that there would come a time when he would need to establish contact with Carol Danvers in future. According to the theory, this might also explain Strange’s namecheck in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and also add some context to what Fury said in the post-credits scene.
“Doctor strange knows what happens in the future; he sets it up in fact. He knew that Thanos had to snap his fingers at that exact right time and under all these certain conditions for them to win. He’s setting up Captain Marvel’s return to Earth. I believe he’ll appear in the CM movie and tell Fury it is vital for him to carry around with him the pager to contact Captain Marvel. Nick Fury, knowing about Steven Strange lists him as an ally to shield which of course is how Hydra knows about him despite him being a neurosurgeon (anyone who is an ally of SHIELD is a threat to HYDRA).
The theory further elaborates:
He warns him of an event in the future referring [sic] to the people turning to dust without warning, this is why Fury’s instant reaction to seeing Maria Hill turn to ash was to run to the pager, but what our good friend Sorcerer Supreme didn’t mention was the fact that he does not survive hence the “Mother Fu…” at the very end. We should also take note that the way he says it isn’t panicked [sic] or scared, he’s confident that Strange knows what he’s doing.”
To be honest, this is a fabulous idea and one that might just come true. The fact is, it would be fantastic to see Strange appear in Captain Marvel, in such a way that links the film deeply to Avengers 4. Fury’s last comment also would appear funnier than tragic if you realize that he was swearing at Strange for not having told him that he would also die.
Similarly, the whole context of time travel would also smugly fit in with Avengers 4’s plot, which in our opinion will witness a time leap of a few years and will also take us through some of the most iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe films. In our opinion, this theory about Avengers: Infinity War might just have some potential.
