Doctor Strange Has A Plan And For That To Work, [SPOILER] Needs To Be Alive

One fascinating twist in the Avengers: Infinity War movie involves a scene with Doctor Strange and Tony Stark. In the first half of the movie, Strange says that he will sacrifice anyone to prevent Thanos from getting the Time Stone. But we see him offering Thanos the Time Stone if he allows Tony Stark to live. This is an unexpected moment, and Stark is shocked.

It has been implied that this is a result of Strange using the Time Stone. The Sorcerer Supreme has learned a lot about the Time Stone and got a glimpse of millions of futures, in order to create a plan to defeat the Mad Titan. Strange then says that he saw only one possible future out of 14,000,605 where Thanos had been defeated. At the movie’s end, as he fades from existence, Strange tells Tony; “There was no other way.”

Strange had looked beyond the ending of Avengers: Infinity War.

THE AVENGERS NEED STARK

Most of the heroes tend to be reactionary. Stark is different, and he is a futurist. Marvel uses this term to describe a hero who recognizes threats and possibilities. The MCU has reproduced this element of Stark’s character; one glimpse of the alien invasion was enough to tell Stark that another one was on its way.

A futurist is a pretty dangerous force, and the MCU has made this clear. Believing an alien invasion was on its way, Stark tried to create a global defense system – Ultron.

In Civil War, Stark focused on the fact the United Nations will push for measures, and he sacrificed the Avengers’ unity for the short-term.

In Infinity War, a futurist is what the Avengers need. Most heroes are reactive, and may find themselves struggling to deal with reality. Tony Stark, can look beyond this. A futurist is a person who can ask; can this be undone?

STARK KNOWS ABOUT ALTERNATE DIMENSIONS AND TIME TRAVEL

“When did you become an expert in thermonuclear astrophysics,” Maria Hill had asked Stark in The Avengers.

“Last night,” he responded.

There is a sense in which Tony Stark is a comic book genius; he is so intelligent that he can master a new scientific discipline overnight. It is true that Marvel has teased that he is not the smartest one and Shuri is smarter than Stark.

When on Titan, Tony saw Doctor Strange using the Time Stone to see alternate futures. He is smart enough to intuit that the multiverse is real and time-travel is possible.

If this is the case, then it means that history can be rewritten.

There is a lot of evidence that Avengers 4 is a time-travel movie, including a few set photos that show members of the Avengers wearing strange timepieces.

TONY STARK IS THE MASTER OF MYSTIC ARTS

Infinity War and Avengers 4 had been filmed back-to-back, and there is some overlap in filming. This means some of the BTS footage which is released may link to Avengers 4.

There are mysterious shots wear Tony Stark wears the Cloak of Levitation on Titan. It had been assumed to be part of an action sequence, but now that Strange is wiped out from existence, it might mean something more. He was not wearing the Cloak at the time and this means it is around for Tony to take up.

In the comics, many scientists have dabbled with the mystic arts. Mr. Fantastic was given possession of an amulet. X-Men’s Beast had learned some mystic tricks and almost unleashed a Hell-dimension.

In the comics and the MCU, science and magic are essentially one and the same. Marvel Studios has worked pretty hard to establish a scientific basis for the sorcery.

While producing Doctor Strange, Marvel had consulted many theoretical physicists and experts in quantum mechanics. Considering the scientific principles which underpin the MCU’s magic, it is hardly, inconceivable that Tony Stark will start to intuit the laws of magic.

THE SACRIFICE

The untitled Avengers 4 is like a “last hurrah” for the team.  With the next film as the finale, it looks pretty likely that Tony Stark will pay the price.

In the first Iron Man, he had revealed his identity.

“I never said you were a superhero,” Everhart had teased.

Steve Rogers then challenged Tony in a similar way,

“You’re not the guy to make the sacrifice play,” Captain America said.

“To lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you.”

Doctor Strange was making a “sacrifice play” in Infinity War. He had seen the future and knew what Thanos would do with the Gauntlet. When Strange gave the Time Stone to Thanos, he was aware that he would be erased from existence.

“There was no other way,” he said.

If Avengers 4 concludes with Stark’s death, there will be a good inversion to it.
