Disney And Lin- Manuel Miranda To Present Hamilton In The Movie Theatres In 2021

Now that the popular musical Hamilton has had its run on Broadway, the original creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda might be more willing for a movie adaptation of the musical. He has agreed with Disney and the Hamilton movie has been officially announced. It is likely to hit the big screen in 2021 but won’t be a straight-up adaptation of the musical. The fans believe that the movie will introduce some new elements that were not seen before in the musical.

It is interesting to note that Disney announced Hamilton adaptation after the Cats debacle which was another musical adaptation that tanked the big screens. Cats was released last December and the characters were brought to life literally through CGI. But, the real-life adaptation proved to be a catastrophe because the CGI characters were heavily ridiculed for their looks. We surely hope that Disney would not go overboard with Hamilton the same way and the movie will prove to be a success.

Miranda and Disney appear hopeful for the success of this musical that has bagged a whole lot of awards including 11 Tony Awards, Grammy Award, Olivier Award, and Pulitzer Prize. The film is said to release in the United States and Canada on Oct 15, 2021.

The screencast for the movie will include Mirada, Selle, and Kail who will direct as well as act in the movie. Other notable cast members include members from the original musical:  Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom Jr, Christopher Jackson, Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onaodowan and Anthony Ramos.

According to Robert A. Iger, Chairman of The Walt Disney Company “Lin-Manuel Miranda created an unforgettable theater experience and a true cultural phenomenon, and it was for good reason that Hamilton was hailed as an astonishing work of art. All who saw it with the original cast will never forget that singular experience. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to share this same Broadway experience with millions of people around the world.”

Miranda commented, “I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations – The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin. I’m so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton – a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater. We’re excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of Hamilton to the largest audience possible.”

And Thomas Kail added on, “We are thrilled for fans of the show, and new audiences across the world, to experience what it was like on stage – and in the audience – when we shot this at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016. We wanted to give everyone the same seat, which is what this film can provide,”
