When it comes to life beyond our Earth there is an enormous amount of curiosity among the people. However, that did not quite translate into the success of the movie “They Live” primarily because of the social structure they put up which the Americans are generally averse to. However, it was critically acclaimed and for the unique thought and story that goes into the making of the movie, it has its own space in the crowd of Hollywood conventional cinema.

The movie released in the year 1988 and was directed by John Carpenter. The concept of the movie is nothing like the usual movies that you would see about the alien life. The movie manages to explore the social conditions as well and can be also viewed as a kind of a satire on the political and social structure of the world. It is somewhat based on the story “Eight o clock in the morning” by Ray Nelson.

The plot of the movie goes like this. The world is secretly run by some aliens who have managed to disguise themselves as humans. So without the knowledge of the human world, they continue to live amongst them and they constitute the ruling class. These aliens determine the market behavior of the humans among other things and virtually have the world under their control without the humans having no knowledge of that. However, the story of the movie traces the journey of Nada and Frank who happen to discover the reality behind the ruling class. They are challenged by the alien forces and despite a brave attempt, Nada is fatally wounded. However, he manages to let the humans all over the world know about reality.

Although it was not a raging hit it did receive a decent collection with the movie grossing $13 million with a budget of $3million only.

“Bearded Man: “Our impulses are being redirected. We are living in an artificially induced state of consciousness that resembles sleep. (…) The poor and the underclass are growing. Racial justice and human rights are nonexistent. They have created a repressive society, and we are their unwitting accomplices. Their intention to rule rests with the annihilation of consciousness. We have been lulled into a trance. They have made us indifferent to ourselves, to others. We are focused only on our own gain. Please understand. They are safe as long as they are not discovered. That is their primary method of survival. Keep us asleep, keep us selfish, keep us sedated.”
