Actor/writer Simon Pegg from Star Trek has shared his preference for the superhero that he wishes to play on the big screen: Captain Britain. He is at present an important Star Trek part where he plays Scotty, and also the character of Benji in the Mission: Impossible franchise. The actor was asked about the comic book character that he wishes to play in a movie, and he mentioned that he would love to play Marvel’s, Captain Britain.
Captain Britain debuted in 1976 in comics produced by Marvel’s UK branch. He was originally limited to that region only and was apparently a British version of Captain America. The initial stories were rooted in English mythology, and various renowned writers such as Chris Claremont and Alan Moore wrote them. The superhero was the second persona of Brian Braddock, and he had pledged to uphold his country’s law and to protect its people.
As the character gained popularity, he became more prominent in Marvel Universe, and various important storylines such as Secret Invasion and House of M. had featured him. He has a sister Betsy Braddock who has been present in the Fox’s X-MenUniverse as Psylocke, a character that Olivia Munn played in X-Men: Apocalypse. There were rumors back in 2016 about a Captain Britain TV series being in the works, but, that probably never went past the planning stages.
While talking to Joblo, Pegg was questioned about his choice of superhero, and he said:
“I mean, Captain Britain was this Marvel superhero that I loved growing up, ’cause he was the British member of that community. I even have a Captain Britain mask when I was a kid, but I fear I would probably be slightly too old now, but if they do have… If a Captain Britain movie comes about, they’re gonna need a British cast, so… I’ll be waiting.”
The choice is obvious and quite popular with actors of British origin, and Marvel Studios might not have accurately understood how popular the character is in the UK. Sometime back Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Loki aka Tom Hiddleston stated that he would either want to play Captain Britain or Galactus. While Hiddleston’s words indicate that he doesn’t have as much knowledge of the character as Pegg has and he might not have worn a mask as a kid.
Another actor who was earlier connected to the actor was Christian Bale. Captain Britain hasn’t yet been mentioned in the ongoing MCU movies, but, Kevin Feige had acknowledged that the discussions are on to introduce him on the big screen. It might likely take place in Phase 4. It would also not be difficult to find comic book precedence, because Braddock had been a part of The Avengers once and even shared a room with Peter Parker.
Pegg is practical about the possibility of playing the character and says his age is also a factor, but, there have been several appearances by older versions of Braddock in a number of stories over the years. The actor is also a talented writer, and he wrote Star Trek Beyond and also contributed to sci-fi comedies Paul and The World’s End. Therefore, if a Captain Britain movie is made in the years to come, Pegg is worthy of consideration as either the actor or the writer.
